How Laser Hair Removal (LHR) Licensing Works In Texas, The Texas Department Of Licensing & Regulation (TDLR)?

Laser Hair Removal (LHR) in Texas is regulated by the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation (TDLR)! The state has established four licensing levels: Apprentice (Level 1), Technician (Level 2), Senior Technician (Level 3), and Professional Technician (Level 4).

Students must begin with Level 1 (Apprentice) and progress through each licensing level in order. TDLR does not allow individuals to skip directly to higher licensing levels.

To legally perform laser hair removal treatments in Texas, individuals must complete both the Level 1 Apprentice and Level 2 Technician requirements and work within a facility that has appropriate physician oversight and authorization for laser procedures.

Facilities offering laser hair removal services must have a licensed professional laser hair removal technician (Level 4) physically present whenever laser treatments are being performed, as required by Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation (TDLR) regulations.

The 4 levels of Laser Hair Removal (LHR) Licensing:

1) Apprentice Laser Hair Removal Technician (Level 1):

The Apprentice level focuses primarily on theory and classroom instruction, providing students with a strong understanding of how laser technology works and how to perform treatments safely.

After successfully completing this course, you will receive a certificate from the institute. With this certificate, you may apply for your apprentice laser hair removal technician license with the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation (TDLR).

This license does not allow you to perform treatments independently. Apprentice license holders must perform laser hair removal treatments under the direct supervision of a licensed senior laser hair removal technician or professional laser hair removal technician, as required by state regulations.

2) Laser Hair Removal Technician (Level 2):

Once students obtain their Apprentice Laser Hair Removal Technician license, they may proceed to Level II. This level focuses entirely on hands-on clinical training. There are no lectures, as students have already completed the required theory in Level I. During this course, students will perform laser hair removal treatments on live models under supervision to develop practical skills and confidence.

After successfully completing this training, students will receive an official completion document from the institute. With this document, students may apply for their laser hair removal technician license with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).

Once licensed as a laser hair removal technician, individuals are allowed to perform laser hair removal treatments without direct supervision, provided they work in a licensed facility that operates under a medical director (such as a medical spa or clinic), as required by state regulations.

3) Senior Laser Hair Removal Technician (Level 3):

This level requires the completion of additional observation of laser hair removal treatments to further develop clinical experience and understanding of treatment procedures.

After completing the required observations and receiving approval from the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation (TDLR), the individual may obtain the Senior Laser Hair Removal Technician license. A senior laser hair removal technician may also temporarily step in for a professional laser hair removal technician for up to 45 days during a brief absence, as permitted under state regulations.

4) Professional Laser Hair Removal Technician (Level 4):

This is the highest level of laser hair removal licensing in Texas. To qualify, individuals must complete all previous licensing levels and pass the required state examination.

After meeting these requirements and receiving approval from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), the individual may obtain the Professional Laser Hair Removal Technician license.

Under state regulations, every facility that offers laser hair removal treatments must have a professional laser hair removal technician on-site at all times while treatments are being performed. This role ensures that treatments are conducted safely and in compliance with state requirements.
